Gramática del inglés: Paso a paso by Elizabeth Weal is the book I've been waiting for all these years!  It clearly explains in Spanish the basics of English grammar and systematically presents and reviews basic vocabulary.  The format of the book provides explanations and examples on the left-hand side and exercises on the right-hand side so students can easily refer to the explanations and models while completing the exercises.  I find that both slow learners and fast learners love this book!

I always suspected something like this book must exist, though after exploring several others over a period of time I began to lose hope; too often ESL books fill their pages with side-notes and gobs of obtuse or otherwise less useful vocabulary. Even worse, instructions in English can often be confusing introductions to rather silly exercises, and all the while explain nothing about the structure and (few) rules of English. To my mind, Elizabeth Weal's book(s) perfectly address these shortcomings of other ESL materials. Not only has she pared away the distracting and impertinent elements, she offers instructions in Spanish, an addition that succeeds in focusing the students' attention on the subject matter at hand. In this way, I find my students recognize quickly what it is they are being asked to do, and they also then react to the material as though it is, in fact, an academic subject to be studied and considered like any other. In other words, I couldn't be happier with her books had I written them myself; and then again, maybe I am happier because I don't have to spend the time designing these activities myself... I have more time simply to work with my students, perhaps the finest accomplishment of Gramática del Inglés.

I've been going through this book with my adult ESL students for 2 months. It is easy for them to work through exercises at home because it is written in their native language. I've used other materials where the majority of instruction is through the English medium. This is ineffective for English language learners, especially beginners. A student could actually work through this on their own, but would miss out on the communicative aspect of a class. Very simple and effective!

It is very helpful to have a book that describes grammar in the learners' first language. My students like this book so much that some of them do the exercises at home on their own. In class, I ask for a volunteer 'teacher' who reads the explanations in Spanish. We go over the exercises and expand upon them with conversation practice about their own life situations. It's a great text. I recommend it highly.

Gramatica del ingles: Paso a paso is a wonderful book to teach from. I never knew English grammar could be so easy to teach. My students are enjoying it very much and picking up English grammar faster than ever; every time we do a grammar lesson they are willing and ready to learn because they're learning at a faster pace because the grammar is being explained in Spanish; then they apply the explanation in English through each activity. Excellent work!

Just received Elizabeth Weal's Gramatica del ingles: Paso a paso(Spanish edition) and am thrilled with it. As an ESL teacher with 98% Hispanic students I highly recommend this book. All the students love the book. Students can work alone with this book or work together in groups. Students can also do reading aloud which helps the ESL students work on pronunciation. Each chapter leads to further discussion about vocabulary and grammar. Many of my students have a low level of education in their native language and this book is very easy for them to use and understand. I give this book an A+ in the areas of content, format, ease of use, relevancy and meeting outcomes. I have also used book 1 in the series and have had wonderful results with it also. Our GED teacher uses the English versions and also highly recommends these books. The price is great too.
